The disaster is real, the loss is devastating and the need is urgent. We need to help them the best way we can and be part of the solution. Here are some photos taken first hand by a friend's cousin who missed being washed away by the flash floods in the Philippines.

Relief Efforts for Philippine Typhoon Sendong

As grateful as I am for this amazing year that has passed, my fellow kababayans in the Philippines have been affected by a natural disaster--Typhoon Sendong.

Over 600 people have been killed, 900 people missing and at least 100,000 are left distraught and homeless.

In the spirit of giving and love this holiday season, I ask you to kindly help out in one way or another to those who have lost their homes and their loved ones in one of the most supposed wonderful time of the year.

Some of the items that are needed are blankets, clothes, slippers, hygiene products,and some basic medicines like tylenol or even generic acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Aid is urgently needed to those affected by the typhoon, and the most immediate way to respond is through monetary donations. Red Cross and Gawad Kalinga provide tax-deductible receipts, however, there are also several other ways to give:

1) For those local to the Portland area
During the Simbang Gabi Masses here in Portland (Holy Trinity and St. Therese), we are collecting materials that will be sent to the typhoon victims in balikbayan boxes. The boxes have been paid for by the Catholic priests of our Archdiocese. Please encourage everyone you know to come to the Simbang Gabi and bring with you your donated items. Mass at St therese church (Northeast site) is at 7:30 pm and at Holy Trinity in Beaverton (Westside) at 7pm until December 23. They will also collect funds to send to the victims.

2) Gawad Kalinga
Operation Walang Iwanan for Iligan, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro. Team GK from nearby provinces are now being mobilized to help the worst-hit areas. Negros Occidental will help Dumaguete, Bukidnon and Agusan del Norte will help Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, while organizing the local volunteers of the impact areas as well.

They are targeting to initially generate 5000 food packs for the first two days starting December 19 to be simultaneously distributed to the different barangays in the affected areas. I appeal for you to act on this opportunity to be our brothers keeper.

AS SUPER TYPHOON SLAMS PHILIPPINES

Manila, October 18, 2010--Catholic Relief Services is readying emergency humanitarian aid for families affected by Typhoon Megi, the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines in years. The typhoon struck northeast Luzon on Monday and has already damaged houses, infrastructure, and crops.

"Heavy rains are blanketing northern Luzon following the extreme winds experienced today," says Joe Curry, country representative for CRS in the Philippines. "We are watching for potential flooding and getting access to affected areas."

CRS is working with local dioceses and with Caritas Philippines to respond to the crisis. Arnaldo Arcadia, Emergency Program Manager for CRS, was at a parish outside the city of Baguio during a bad point in Monday's storm. "We took refuge in the parish when the winds were strong and the rain was battering down," he says. He and CRS partners were eventually able to return to the city.

Crop damage is a concern for northern Luzon's impoverished farmers. "The wind has become very strong now," said Father Val Dimoc on Monday from the mountainous Cordillera region. "Upland rice farmers who planted in early July were about to harvest, but their crops have been blown down by the wind."

In the immediate wake of 2009's devastating Typhoon Ketsana, CRS reached over 10,000 people with emergency items like cookware, soap, and buckets. In the following months, CRS employed survivors to remove flood debris and clear drainage areas. It also rebuilt houses.

CRS has worked in the Philippines since 1945, assisting those in need without regard to race or creed.

Immediate Responses & Temporary Solutions to Long-Term Problem

When I was in the Philippines a month ago, most of the Metro and the areas that I have went to look back to normal. The billboards are all up again on EdSA, everyone is back to work/school and there are not a lot of volunteer locations anymore since people have to go back to regular programming.

Ondoy was not in the news anymore or as much. Elections are coming up and so campaigning has begun and people are talking about political moves/hopes/worries. But from what I have seen, most things are back to normal again and I am actually hearing more news abroad about people helping than from people back at home.

So what now, Filipinos? Are we just going to provide temporary solutions to long-term problems? What can we do in order to be better prepared in the future?

The effect of Ondoy to those I know who were affected is trauma. When there was a storm one weekend, the rains weren't heavy at all, the wind was slightly strong in the morning, HOWEVER, the streets were clear. People do not want to go out or mobilize when there are storn signal forecasts. They're afraid that they might get stuck somewhere and cannot be home.

Another effect of a batchmate I know is that every time it would rain hard, she would bring up her stuff to the second floor of her house just to make sure she won't lose things. A lot of people are still recovering from the typhoon, however, have to go back to work and talk about the storm and how it affected them (post-traumatic stress/part of letting go, etc).

RockEd Philippines is a volunteer group that provides venues and events for alternative education in the Philippines and they have tied up with DSWD to help sort out goods in their warehouse in Pasay. There's a lot of help needed in packing goods, but unfortunately, they have also expressed that they would need a lot of manpower to be able to distribute these goods. THEY STILL NEED YOUR HELP UNTIL NOW.

I am aware that a few months back, there has been a media outburst about DSWD and civilians taking relief goods from the supplies and not providing or giving it ot those who really need it. While this cannot be denied nor fully proved, it should not stop us from helping in every single way that we can.

I hope that we find ways to organize ourselves in preparations for future disasters...and not jsut provide immediate and temporary relief for long term issues.

Dear Friends:

For many of us in Portland, the headlines of the Philippine floods, Samoan tsunami and Indonesian earthquake bear other pieces of news: family relatives who had to flee their homes to find safety, friends who have no more belongings to their names and communities which no longer exist.

For me, it is about Gus - a longtime Filipino activist who has dedicated his life building the voices of forgotten and ignored communities whose modest possessions are now buried in mud. It is about Auntie Alma, whose children benefitted from the kindness of strangers when all the nearby stores had lost all their inventories of food. And it is about my mother, who tirelessly rallied her church amigas to adopt homeless families in the time after the flood.

As a Filipino immigrant living in the US, the 6000 miles apart is both a bane and a boon. It is a bane because I cannot be part of the immediate struggle for recovery and rehabilitation. There is no comfort being so far away and unable to help clear away the debris, shelter and feed those with need, or participate in the rituals of loss and grief. And yet, there is relief in what I can do here in my adopted home of Portland - which is to help bring community together in a time of struggle, need and solidarity.

So on Oct 30th, from 6-8pm at Portland State University Smith Memorial Student Union, Colored Pencils is dedicating their monthly pan-immigrant artists + community gathering to the survivors of the various Asian tragedies. Please come and join poets, artists, dancers, singers from the Asian region share the names, lives and stories of the affected and help raise funds that will support the long-term recovery of our peoples.

The incredible gift of Portland is its generosity. Already, so many people have come forward, offering their talents, their art, their wealth to make this night happen. We would be so honored and grateful if you and your friends would join us!

Wells Fargo Donates $100,000 to American Red Cross

SAN FRANCISCO — September 29, 2009

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) —with its remittance network member Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) – is temporarily eliminating all remittance transfer fees (normally $5 or $7) for customers sending money using the ExpressSend® service to friends and family in the Philippines impacted by Typhoon Ketsana (also known as Typhoon Ondoy). The fee waiver is effective September 29 through October 12, 2009.

Wells Fargo also is donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.

ExpressSend customers can send up to $3,000 a day for $5 if originated from an eligible Wells Fargo account (or $7 if originated from cash). The fee will be waived September 29 through October 12, 2009. Recipients can claim their funds at more than 800 branches and 1,500 plus ATMs throughout the Philippines.

“Bank of the Philippine Islands sympathizes with and shares in the plight of the victims of Typhoon Ondoy (international name is Typhoon Ketsana),” said Teresita Tan, SVP and Group Head, Overseas Banking and Channel Services for Bank of the Philippine Islands. “With the temporary fee waiver, we encourage our Filipino kababayans overseas who wish to donate to the flood victims to remit through BPI and Wells Fargo.”

Donations of relief items to victims of Typhoon Ondoy (international name: Ketsana) can now be shipped for free through LBC Mundial Corp. (LBC USA), Hugo Bonilla, the company's president and CEO announced today through a press release.

As an international company servicing the padala needs of Filipinos worldwide, LBC joins in the global efforts to provide assistance to families in the Philippines devastated by Typhoon Ondoy.

All donated items coursed through LBC USA will be sent to only one recipient in the Philippines, LBC Hari ng Padala Foundation (LHPF). LHPF will in turn distribute the goods to various non-profits that are conducting relief efforts in the affected communities in Metro Manila and Luzon provinces.

"As of Oct. 1, all LBC branches in the U.S. are now drop-off points for in-kind donations to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines," Mr. Bonilla said. This development follows the partnership inked last Sept. 29 between LBC USA and ABS CBN Foundation's Sagip Kapamilya for cash donations.

In addition to waiving service fees for cash donations remitted directly to the Sagip Kapamilya program, LBC has decided to offer its sea cargo service for free after LHPF committed to sorting and distributing the donated items coming from donors in the U.S.

"Before deciding on offering this free service, we wanted to make sure there is one non-profit recipient in the Philippines who will take on the daunting task of sorting the big volume of donated items," explained Mr. Bonilla.

Rules and Box Sizes - All donated items must be boxed and sealed in standard-sized balikbayan boxes. LBC will not accept open boxes or unpacked items.

Donors in California, Oregon, Washington State, Nevada and Hawaii can only use the 24x18x18 box size while donors in New Jersey, New York, Illinois and Virginia can only use the 28x18x17 box size.

In Saipan, only box size 18x20x22 is accepted while LBC in Canada's British Columbia will only accept the 18x18x30 box size.

Medical Teams International Sending Aid to the Philippines

It is said to be Signal #4 already in Bicol. Rainfall in Manila shall commence in 3-4 hours. People are advised to get to high ground ASAP. All we can do right now is hope and pray that it will not devastate our nation state of calamity even more.

According to this online news article, another typhoon named Parma is said to be on its way to hit the Philippines again as early as Friday. It is a dangerous threat to the nation that is just recovering from Typhoon Katsana, more commonly known as Ondoy, as it is said to be an equivalent at least to a Category 3 hurricane.

Please note that the company we are in touch with to send balikbayan boxes for free has not yet confirmed and communicated that they have approved our donation application just yet. We are waiting to hear word (that will take about 2 weeks minimum) from their corporate office as to what the decision is. I apologize for the misinformation being passed around at the moment with regards to the free balikbayan boxes. HOPEFULLY, this application can be put into action SOON.

Lighting a Candle in a Dark Room: Reflections from Last Night

Fr. Tony Ong celebrated mass at the Holy Trinity Chapel in Beaverton, OR last night at 7:30pm to gather the Filipino community in prayer and love for the victims of the recent Typhoon Ondoy that has devastated various cities in the Philippines. There was an estimate of 49 attendees who came and shared their sorrows upon the unexpected loss of their family members' livelihood and homes.

Despite having deep worries and concerns about loved ones affected by the disaster, the group also expressed hope and steadfast faith in the Lord as God will help us get through this unfortunate incident and provide strength and love in this difficult time. Mass goers at Holy Trinity Chapel last night was able to raise over $1,100 and chose to donate this amount to Ayala Foundation as the vehicle for cash donations.

Thank you to Fr. Tony for spiritually leading the group and allowing us to share our inmost thoughts and concerns about our loved ones back at home. Thank you also to Franz and Monette Mallari for organizing the mass and calling everyone to gather in prayer. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts and personal information about their loved ones back at home who were affected by typhoon Ondoy. Thank you to everyone who attended and donated what they could at the mass.

Although the disaster is devastating and heartbreaking, we should be reminded that we are not alone in our sufferings. As we share our happiness with God, we also share our sufferings with the Lord. We are not alone in our hurts, frustrations and fears. We gather as one community to help others in every possible way that we can by donating money, goods, time and support. Our strength lies in our love for our God, our country and each other. We need to show that love is present in our lives especially in times like this. Medical Teams International Helps Filipino Typhoon Survivors

[PORTLAND, Ore. - Sept. 28, 2009] — More than 500,000 people are homeless and at least 141 people are confirmed dead since Typhoon Ketsana roared across the Philippines this past weekend.
Medical Teams International is now accepting cash contributions to help. “We have medicines on the way to the scene and are in touch with two of our Global Relief Alliance partners who are responding in the field.
“We know we will be sending help, we just do not know yet if our teams are needed,” said Tammy Teske, Medical Teams International's manager of emergency relief.
Deadly rains left residents scrambling for survival Friday and Saturday as 20 foot-walls of water covered their homes. Families were stranded on roofs for 24 hours.
One partner asked: “Please pray that the children will not get sick ….pray that the weather will improve. Pray that the families will keep their hope. There are families who entirely lost their belongings because of the flooding.”

Oregon Relief Operations/Donations for Typhoon Ondoy Victims

As most of you might know, Filipinos abroad are currently raising awareness and finding out ways to be able to be part of the relief operations back at home through organizing various fundraisers and alliances among organizations nationwide.

A number of us Filipinos in Oregon are in the process of organizing ourselves to find ways to donate to those affected by typhoon Ondoy. I will keep everyone posted about this but for now, I think what's important right is to be able to inform everyone in Oregon HOW we could help.
